Children deserve happiness and the opportunity to enjoy the innocence and bliss of youth. Unfortunately, that sense of innocence and wonder is stripped from countless children who experience abuse from strangers, acquaintances, and even family members and loved ones. In fact, 1 in 10 children will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday.
My own experience working with children who have been abused motivates me to support the McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Center, the only child advocacy center in Onondaga County which is dedicated to healing children who have been abused and raising awareness to prevent child abuse. I will never forget seeing young children struggle to make sense of their horrific experiences, or when they hesitate to receive warmth and affection. Such experiences leave a lump in my heart and remind me what a privilege it is to live a happy childhood.
