Darkness to Light

What is D2L?

Darkness to Light (D2L) Stewards of Children is an interactive sexual abuse prevention training program. Ending childhood sexual abuse can only be accomplished by sharing the solution of prevention, awareness and education with more and more people.  This, in turn, builds momentum and over time, changes the way our nation and culture cares for, protects and nurtures our children. Being an active participant in the mission to end childhood sexual abuse is one of the most rewarding things we will ever do – and we cannot do it without you.

Learning the facts about childhood sexual abuse helps prevent it. Talking about it helps prevent it. Getting involved helps prevent it.  Children’s safety should not rest on their shoulders but on the shoulders of caring adults.

 Stewards of Children Training

D2L’s Stewards of Children curriculum is evidence-based and increases knowledge, improves attitudes and supports protecting children from child sexual abuse. Stewards of Children uses real people and real stories to show you how to protect children. You will leave the training with the desire and ability to make change happen.

The two-hour Stewards of Children training is offered monthly at McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Center and can also be provided at your location.  The cost is $15 per participant, covering the cost of the interactive workbook. The training is approved for CEU’s for social work professional hours and by New York State Office of Child & Family Services.

D2L Supplemental Trainings

Talking with Children about Safety from Sexual Abuse*

An important step in protecting children from sexual abuse involves having age-appropriate, open conversations about their bodies and safe boundaries.  These conversations build trust, confidence, and instill knowledge that reduces vulnerability in children.  Participants will learn how to talk with and listen to children about sexual abuse and personal body safety.  This interactive, supplemental training builds on the education provided in Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children training.

Healthy Touch for Children & Youth*

Healthy affection and touch is a protective factor against child sexual abuse especially with parents, caregivers, and family members.  Participants will learn guidelines for healthy touch as well as safe, respectful ways to interact with children at home and in youth-serving organizations.  This interactive, supplemental training builds on the education provided in Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children training.

Bystanders Protecting Children from Boundary Violation & Sexual Abuse*

Bystanders are people who witness boundary violations or see situations where children are vulnerable.  This training discusses the necessary actions bystanders can take in preventing, intervening, and responding to situations of child sexual abuse.  Participants will learn to recognize boundary violations, red flag behaviors, and what they can do to take action against suspected or disclosed child sexual abuse.  This interactive, supplemental training builds on the education provided in Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children training.

Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children*

Commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) is any sexual activity with a child for which something of value is exchanged or promised.  Greater than 90% of children who are commercially sexually exploited have been sexually abused in the past.  Participants will learn the root cause of commercial sexual exploitation, what makes children vulnerable to these situations, and what actions they can take to prevent sexual exploitation in children.  This interactive, supplemental training builds on the education provided in Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children training.

*These trainings are offered within a 45-60 minute time slot.
